Ayurveda recognizes that the universe is composed of five great elements: Space (Akasha), Air (Vayu), Fire (Tejas), Water (Jala), and Earth (Prithvi). In the human physiology, these five elements combine into three biological governing forces known as the Tridoshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
None of us is just one Dosha; we are all dynamic combinations of all three, with one or two predominating. Recognizing which force is elevated allows you to make intuitive, life-affirming choices each day.
1. Vata (Air + Ether) — The Principle of Movement
Vata governs breathing, nerve impulses, and circulation. When balanced, Vata individuals are imaginative, enthusiastic, and quick-thinking. When out of balance, they suffer from dry skin, insomnia, anxiety, gas, and cold extremities. Remedy: Warm, cooked, soupy meals with healthy oils and sweet spices.
2. Pitta (Fire + Water) — The Principle of Transformation
Pitta rules digestion, body heat, and intellect. Balanced Pitta individuals exhibit strong leadership, sharp intellect, and glowing skin. Imbalance shows up as acidity, inflammatory skin rashes, anger, and heat intolerance. Remedy: Sweet, bitter, and cooling foods such as cucumber, ghee, coconut, and mint.
3. Kapha (Water + Earth) — The Principle of Structure
Kapha provides lubrication, stamina, immunity, and compassion. Balanced Kapha individuals are calm, loyal, and physically strong. When aggravated, Kapha creates weight gain, sinus congestion, lethargy, and resistance to change. Remedy: Light, dry, warming meals rich in pungent spices like black pepper, ginger, and steamed leafy vegetables.
